CBD for Acne Prevention

Did you know that acne is the most common skin condition in the United States, with over 50 million people being affected yearly?

As one of the signs of puberty, it is most common at adolescence; this, however, does not encourage the misconception that only teenagers can be affected by the condition as it can occur at any age.

What is Acne?

Acne is a common skin problem, and as such, several treatment methods have been suggested as remedies. It is not unusual to link the skin disease to diet, but although scientists have found that a diet rich in zinc, Vitamin A and E may help lower the chances of acne, the link between the two factors is considered controversial. Other common treatments include supplements, moisturizers and topical creams. Although not all suggested treatments for acne are supported by research, recent reports have shown that cannabidiol may provide treatment for the skin condition.

Acne is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease caused by overworked sebaceous glands. It causes spots and pimples to appear on the affected area which is often, the face, neck, shoulders, back, chest, and upper arms.

Sebum Production and Its Link To Acne

The pores of the human skin are linked to the oil glands under the skin by follicles; small sacs involved in the production and secretion of liquid. These glands produce an oily liquid called sebum which carries dead skin cells through the follicles to the surface of the skin. The follicles are tiny openings on the skin through which hair grows, and when they get blocked, it results in the buildup of excess oil under the skin. Acne develops when the pores get blocked by oil, bacteria, dead skin cells, and dirt. One major cause of acne is a rise in androgen levels. Androgen is a hormone which is increasingly produced in the body at the start of adolescence. An increase in androgen levels enhances the growth of oil glands under the skin and this, in turn, leads to the production of more sebum. The production of excessive sebum can cause the breakdown of cell walls in the pores, enhancing the growth of bacteria.

CBD And Its Effect On Acne

According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, CBD, partly because of its anti-inflammatory properties, can help to lower the production of sebum in the body. This is encouraging considering the effectiveness of CBD in reducing stress, inflammation and oil production, all of which are causes of acne. CBD is helpful in the regulation of oil production in the body, and this function is performed by inhibiting the production of sebum and calming the sebaceous glands. In line with a publication in the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology, the therapeutic benefits of CBD can be effective in combating inflammation and the development of chronic stress, providing relief and a feeling of calmness in individuals.

Conclusion

With its ability to reduce stress, inflammation, and lower oil production in the body, CBD provides a natural and multifaceted approach to the treatment of acne.
