The Impact of CBD on Cancer Cells

Did you know that according to the World Health Organization, cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide?

This disease is said to be caused by various factors including diet, genetics, and lifestyle. It is believed that addressing the factors which contribute to the development of the cancerous cells may go a long way in preventing it.

New research shows that CBD can have a positive impact on cancer cells in the body and in order to understand this phenomenon, we must understand what cancer is and how it can be affected by cannabidiol.

What is Cancer?

Cancer is a generic term which is used to refer to a group of diseases, characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells and which affect different organs in the body. One prominent feature with which cancer can be identified is its ability to metastasize. The interaction between a person's genetic factors and the biological, physical and chemical carcinogens result in the mutation and conversion of healthy cells into cancerous cells.

Some major risk factors which are responsible for the development of cancer in the body include:

  • Lack of exercise
  • Excessive intake of alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Unhealthy eating habits
  • Obesity
  • Other Factors
If uncontrolled, cancer may lead to death. To prevent this fatal finality, researchers have been studying the effects of CBD on cancer, and the results are promising.

How Does CBD Impact Cancer?

As the most promising cannabinoid in the cannabis and hemp plant, CBD's effects on the body are linked to its interaction with the two primary cell receptors in the endocannabinoid system. The C1 and C2 receptors are located in all parts of the body and are responsible for the regulation of different body systems.

The interactions between CBD and these receptors in the endocannabinoid system create a series of positive changes in the body, and these changes can have a significant impact on individuals who have cancer.

CBD and Cancerous Tumors Studies reveal that cannabinoids like CBD in the cannabis plant can inhibit the growth of tumors and prevent the mutation and spread of cancer cells in the body.

CBD and Pain

Cancer patients suffer painful symptoms of the disease, and this pain is often treated with opioid medications which although effective, have numerous side effects. In exploring various other alternatives, a recent study found that cannabis is equally effective in the treatment of painful symptoms and these findings can potentially lower the need for opioids, morphine and other addictive pain medications in cancer treatment.

CBD and Chemotherapy

Cannabis has also been shown to improve the effects of chemotherapy in treating various forms of cancer. According to a recent study, mice with pancreatic cancer who were treated with CBD and chemotherapy survived almost three times longer than mice who were treated with chemotherapy alone.

CBD and Nausea

As one of the most challenging side effects of chemotherapy, nausea can be extremely difficult to manage especially in cancer patients. Studies reveal that cannabidiols like CBD can be helpful in the regulation of nausea as well as the management of various other stomach issues.

Conclusion

There is no doubt that CBD provides a promising alternative to the treatment of cancer. As more clinical trials and research is conducted to determine its potentials, we may not have long to wait before a new wave of CBD-based cancer medications are produced.
