The Impact of CBD on PTSD

For years, cannabis and hemp have been used as a coping mechanism for individuals with traumatic experiences; however, such a practice was always deemed untoward and problematic. The negative image attached to the use of cannabis and hemp is slowly being erased as we develop a better understanding of the therapeutic effects of the plant.

Scientists have begun conducting extensive research to discover whether cannabis can be effective in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder. A study published in the Journal of Drug and Alcohol Dependence has established a direct relationship between cannabis use and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Before exploring CBD’s ability to alleviate symptoms associated with the disorder, it is necessary to understand what PTSD is.

What Is PTSD?

PTSD or Post-traumatic stress disorder is a psychological condition that is caused by a violent, disturbing and terrifying event which is either witnessed or experienced. Individuals who go through such traumatic events often experience anxiety attacks, flashbacks uncontrollable thoughts and nightmares about the traumatizing event.

Symptoms Of PTSD

Symptoms of this disorder vary in intensity from person to person. They include:
• Recurrent, distressing memories and flashbacks of the event.
• Severe emotional and physical reactions to things which remind you of the event.
• Avoiding people, places, and activities that remind you of the event.
• Feelings of hopelessness about the future.
• Depression
• Being easily startled or frightened
• Insomnia
• Self-destructive or aggressive behavior and angry outbursts.
• Guilt or shame

There is no definite cause of PTSD, and it may develop as a result of a harrowing experience, certain inherited traits or conditions, and even the brain’s response to stress. Typically, due to the role of serotonin in mood regulation, serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are used in the treatment of PTSD. However, the suitability of SSRIs in combating PTSD is now questionable.

Can CBD Be Used To Treat PTSD?

In a 2012 study investigating the anti-anxiety effects of administering CBD in a model of PTSD that was simulated by being exposed to a predator, it was found that “Repeated CBD administration prevents the long-lasting anxiogenic effects observed after predator exposure probably by facilitating 5HT1A receptors neurotransmission. Our results suggest that CBD has the beneficial potential for PTSD treatment and that 5HT1A receptors could be a therapeutic target in this disorder.”

CBD has also been shown to reduce stress and feelings of anxiety, and insomnia, all of which are symptoms of PTSD. This is in line with a 2016 study, an attempt to discover the effectiveness of Cannabidiol oil in the treatment of pediatric anxiety and insomnia as a result of PTSD. It was later published that; “The main finding from this case study is that CBD oil can be an effective compound to reduce anxiety and insomnia secondary to PTSD. This case study provides clinical data that support the use of cannabidiol oil as a safe treatment for reducing anxiety and improving sleep in a young girl with post-traumatic stress disorder.”

Conclusion

Although more research is required to determine the extent to which it can be effectively utilized in the treatment of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, there is no doubt that CBD can have a positive impact on individuals with the condition.
